Posting this since it’s relevant to past experiences, and because I think it’s important to know about it. I strongly encourage you to read it.

Making poverty and wealth history (follow up)

Tuesday, April 17th, 2007

I recently got a comment on a post I wrote quite a while ago. It was from someone who had though about the same thing, and decided to make a whole site about it. While I do not believe that their effort will make a very big difference (at least not enough to do very much about it), I think it is a good thought (and initiative). So, I can at least write about it and hope that someone who would believe enough in it reads it and tries to do something about it.

Information

It’s all about information.
Streamlining the consumption and personal incorporation of information.

Where will it all end?

Consuming for a better world?

Quite recently I read something about an American that had been to Europe and while he was there said he thought the Europeans didn’t consume enough. Reading about that made me start thinking.

Why should the world get any better just because we start consuming more and more? Unfortunately it seems like a great part of humanity thinks so (or maybe it’s only the politicians?). At least it seems so because how well it’s going for a country is measured by how much it’s inhabitants are consuming. Instead of this I think we should aim on consuming less to make the earth’s resources last longer.

The main reason for wanting the consumption to increase is probably because of the big corporations that want to earn much money, which depends on how society is built up. It’s built so that people have to compete, but it should be much better to have a society where everyone cooperated.

And finally, let’s finish with a saying:
The higher you get, the harder you’ll fall.

‘MAKE POVERTY HISTORY’ will MAKE WEALTH HISTORY

As a thought the campain was problably a good thing, but there are serveral reasons as to why I don’t like (i.e. won’t join it). Today, most of the world’s resources (~90% i think it is) are owned by a minority of it’s people (about 10%). So if we should divide these resources evenly among the earth’s population, the living standards in the industrialized countries will drop dramatically. It wouldn’t even be possible to do it and keep the governmental systems as they are today.

Of course there is the idea that we could just improve the living standards in the third world without changing our own lifestyle, but unfortunately that wouldn’t be possible, at least not if we were to improve it so that their standards are anywhere near ours. That is because if we were to do that we would need about three earths more to have enough resources.

Some people would probably call me ignorant, but I think that we cannot do very much to improve the lifes in the third world. I’m not againts humanitarian operations or so, it’s just that I feel there is no meaning in spending lots of money on things that doesn’t make sense really. They could at least start with a plan of some sort (i.e. 1. take over the world. 2. Create one world-wide country/government. 3. Start evening out the differenses among people.)

There is probably people who think that I don’t know enough about the subject, but I know just as much as any normal induvidual would know when he/she is asked to give away some of their money or sign up to make the leaders of their countries give away money.
