Consuming for a better world?

Note: This was originally posted on my old blog, http://tobbez.blogspot.com/, which I don’t use anymore since I wanted to keep everything in one place.
Quite recently I read something about an American that had been to Europe and while he was there said he thought the Europeans didn’t consume enough. Reading about that made me start thinking.

Why should the world get any better just because we start consuming more and more? Unfortunately it seems like a great part of humanity thinks so (or maybe it’s only the politicians?). At least it seems so because how well it’s going for a country is measured by how much it’s inhabitants are consuming. Instead of this I think we should aim on consuming less to make the earth’s resources last longer.

The main reason for wanting the consumption to increase is probably because of the big corporations that want to earn much money, which depends on how society is built up. It’s built so that people have to compete, but it should be much better to have a society where everyone cooperated.

And finally, let’s finish with a saying:
The higher you get, the harder you’ll fall.
